VEDA WELLNESS
CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE THEOLOGIAN
Epidaurus, Greece
Offered exclusively at our Greece Retreat
It is located in the Castle of N. Epidaurus and was built around the 11th century. Its interior was full of hagiographies, very few of which are preserved today. Both the remaining hagiographies and the resonant vessels along the sides speak of the beauty of the Early Christian monument. There used to be a wooden bell once, on the eastern external side of the church niche.
Tradition has it that the church had a golden bell, the sound of which could be heard all the way to Aegina. Until recently, there was an inscription on the wall under the bell: “Chanting this hymn by nature, I have a harmonic rather than an articulated voice”. It is an extract of a Byzantine enigma.
