CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE MERCIFUL
Argolida, Greece
Offered exclusively at our Greece Retreat
It’s a two-column, cross-in-square temple with octagonal dome, that dates in the 12th century. The niche of the sanctuary is hexagonal. The narthex in the west was added later. The temple walls are built in the careless “cloisonne” masonry in the upper parts and rubble masonry (large blocks, ancient building material) with limited use of ceramic ornaments. Inside the church, fragments of murals of the 12th century have survived. “Sgrafitti” of ships are preserved on the stucco of the wall paintings of the narthex.
