MUSEUM OF THE ACROPOLIS OF ATHENS

Epidavros, Greece

Offered exclusively at our Greece Retreat

The Museum of the Acropolis, one of the greatest in the world, comprises unique masterpieces, mostly authentic Greek artifacts from the archaic and classical times, directly related to the sacred rock of the Acropolis of Athens. These are votive sculptures, as well as ensembles of sculptures that used to decorate the edifices erected in various periods at the Acropolis. Among its collections under display are votive and honorary reliefs, clay artifacts, such as vessels, figurines and reliefs, as well as miniatures, such as bronze votive figurines and utensils.

Some of the bronze sculptures and vessels were transferred from the National Archaeological Museum where they were kept. The inscribed works (bases of offerings, honorary decrees, catalogues of the offerings of goddess Athena, building inscriptions from the Erechtheion) were transferred from the Epigraphic Museum, and the coins (“treasures”) from the Numismatic Museum of Athens.

The Acropolis Museum is profoundly wounded by the absence of the authentic sculptures of the Parthenon, now scattered in museums and University collections all over Europe (British Museum, the Louvre). The Acropolis Museum and its activities are inextricably linked to the archaeological site and the restoration works done for the monuments on the Acropolis rock and slopes.
