MUSEUM OF NAFPLIO

The building that houses the Archaeological Museum of Nafplio was erected in 1713 by the Venetian military administrator (Proveditore) Sagredo during the Second Venetian occupation period in order to become the arsenal of the Venetian fleet. The exhibition is housed on the first and second floors while the ground floor is occupied by the offices of the archaeological service of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities. In the future the offices will be transferred to another building in the vicinity and the ground floor of the museum will house temporary exhibitions.

The museum contains collections of Palaeolithic and Mesolithic findings (up to 8000 B.C.) from the caves of Franchthi and Kefalari, Neolithic findings from Kefalari, Dendra and Nafplia (ca. 6000 – 2800 B.C.), early Helladic findings from Asini, Tiryntha and Berbati (2800-2000 B.C.), Middle Helladic findings from Asini and Berbati (2000-1600 B.C.), late Helladic (Mycenaean) findings from Asini, Dendra, Kazarma, Midea, Berbati, Nafplia and Tiryntha (1600-1100 B.C.), Geometric findings from Asini, Nafplia, Tiryntha and private collections (1110-700 B.C.), Archaic findings from Tiryntha, Myloi and Corinthia (700-480 B.C.), classical findings from Tiryntha, Alieis and private collections (323-146 B.C.) and finally Roman findings from Mycenae (up to ca. 500 A.D.)
